Betty is a Real Community Hero

River Clyde Homes’ Real Community Hero campaign recognises the tenant who  best represents the spirit of Inverclyde and who makes a positive impact on the community in which they live.

From big-hearted neighbours to those involved in community groups, tireless volunteers and neighbourhood samaritans, the housing association received over 40 nominations, from across the Inverclyde area.

At the end of the day however there could be only one hero and after much deliberation the judging panel decided that the Real Community Hero for 2011 is Betty Devine who lives in Monkton Place, Port Glasgow.

Anne-Marie Bagstad, Chair of the RCH board, said: "We received a lot of very deserving nominations for the Real Community Hero, but I believe Betty really does encompass all that is positive about living in Inverclyde. She’s the kind of neighbour anyone would wish for.

"We were delighted with the number and quality of the nominations received; it is clear that there are a lot of very community orientated people currently living in River Clyde Homes’ houses.”

She added: "Betty is a fantastic person who makes a real difference to the daily lives of others. She was nominated by a number of people, one of whom said of Betty: “Although Mrs Devine suffers from ill-health herself, she is dedicated to helping the residents of Monkton Place.” Another said: “Betty has been a tower of strength to all of us at Monkton Place.” It is heart warming to see someone so involved in positive activity."

Betty received a trophy to recognise her achievement and the chance to make a donation of £500 to a local charity or community group. She has decided to donate the money to Ardgowan Hospice. Betty said: “I am surprised and overwhelmed at being nominated as a Real Community Hero. I don’t think I do anything special or out-of-the ordinary. All I try to do is be a friendly and helpful neighbour.”
