Use of Personal CCTV and Camera Doorbells – what you need to know!

We understand that some residents may wish to install their own closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems or camera doorbells for added security. Generally, we are agreeable to this, provided that the following conditions are met.

Before Installation

Residents must seek our permission prior to installing any CCTV or camera doorbell. Before granting permission, we may discuss alternative solutions with you, such as enhanced security lighting, to see if these meet your needs.

Data Protection and Your Responsibilities

It is crucial to understand that if your CCTV, camera doorbell, or any similar device captures images and audio recordings beyond the boundary of your own property – for example, in shared areas past your front door, on public roads, or of neighbouring properties – data protection law becomes applicable. In such instances, it is your direct responsibility to ensure that you:

  • Have a clear and justifiable reason for operating the CCTV.
  • Ensure the CCTV does not capture more footage or audio than is strictly necessary for the identified reason.
  • Clearly inform people that CCTV is in use (e.g., by displaying a visible sign).
  • In most situations, provide copies of recordings to individuals whose image or audio (or both) has been captured, upon their request.
  • Delete footage regularly or ensure it is deleted automatically.
  • Cease recording an individual if they object and there is no legitimate reason to continue doing so.

Our Position on Data Processing

Please note that River Clyde Homes accepts no joint responsibility for the processing of any data captured by these personal devices. We strongly advise all residents considering such installations to familiarise themselves with the guidance on Home CCTV systems provided by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

Installation and Maintenance

  • Any damage caused during the installation or removal of the equipment must be made good by the resident.
  • Equipment must not be permanently fixed to features designed for weather protection (e.g., roughcast/render systems or directly onto PVC units).
  • The installation must not compromise fire safety in any way (e.g., by causing damage to fire doors, including flat entrance doors).

Failure to Comply

Failure to adhere to the requirements outlined above may be considered a breach of your tenancy agreement. In such cases, we may request the removal of the equipment. Should a resident fail to remove equipment that does not meet these requirements, we may take action to remove it ourselves and recover any associated costs from the resident.

We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring the responsible and lawful use of personal CCTV and camera doorbells within our communities.
